Tips and Tricks for Your Thanksgiving Road Trip

With the busiest travel holiday on the horizon, there’s a good chance that you’re among the 89% of holiday travelers who will drive to their destinations this year. Make your road trip more enjoyable with these tips and tricks.

Make your road trip more enjoyable

Don’t: Drive Wednesday between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Do: Drive when everyone else is eating and shopping.

Peak traffic times are generally Tuesday and Wednesday in the late afternoon and evening. The best days? Thanksgiving itself, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.

Don’t: Forget to bring road trip activities for the kids.

Do: Charge your iPad and load it up with games.

If you’re bored driving for hours, imagine what your kids have to go through! Load up an iPad with games or go the classic route with the ON the GO line of toys from Melissa & Doug.

Don’t: Wait until your kids are hungry to offer snacks.

Do: Be proactive about keeping everyone full and content.

Blogger Nicole Ramirez from Loving Life and Living on Less plans ahead: “Last time, I loaded up a basket full of snacks and let everyone know what to expect.  Every hour I would be giving out snacks.  There was no need to ask for a snack; they would be offered one when it was time.”

Don’t: Hit the road without these apps.

Do: Consider alternative routes.

Apps like GasBuddy show you the cheapest gas in your area. Waze uses data from other drivers to provide real-time traffic notices and suggest alternative routes.
