Princeville on Kauai’s North Shore is just four miles from Hanalei Town, National Geographic’s #1 pick on its list of the 20 best surf towns. There are beginner-friendly waves off Hanalei Pier along with expert-only waves nearby. The best surfing is from October to March.

Carlsbad is just 10 miles from Encinitas, another one of National Geographic’s favorite surf areas. Its top surfing spot is Moonlight Beach, which offers easy breaks on its central sandbars and more challenging waves at its southern and northern tips. Top surf areas in Carlsbad include: Tamarack, Warm Water Jetty by the large electric power plant and Terramar near the lagoon. South Carlsbad State Beach aka Ponto also gets some well-defined waves. Autumn offers the warmest water temperatures and usually the best swells, but people surf here year round.

Daytona Beach offers surfing camps, which makes it an ideal location for beginning surfers. Daytona is 15 miles away from the great waves at New Smyrna Beach. National Geographic praises entry points at McLeod Bethune Beach Park, Sapphire Road and 27th Avenue. The Ponce Inlet is considered the best surf spot in the Daytona area for advanced surfers. The Main Street Pier is thought to offer the best break. Surfing is good year-round.

Kihei in South Maui has some great surfing and is close to a few other favorites. Kihei is 15 miles from National Geo’s favorite surf town, Paia, where two miles away, the top surfers paddle out at Hookipa Beach Park. Kihei Cove is the top surf spot in Kihei. Nine miles away in Wailuku, surfers love the breaks at Launiupoko State Wayside.

Lahaina in West Maui offers great surfing at Lahaina Reefs where surfers love the waves at Kammies and Shark Pit (on the south end of town) along with the Breakwall reefs. Ukumehame aka “Thousand Peaks” is one of West Maui’s best beginner spots. Other top spots include: Papalaua Park, Puamana Beach Park and Lahaina Harbor. The best surfing is from November to March.

Oahu, Honolulu boasts some of the world’s best surfing on its North Shore. The legendary barreling waves of Pipeline at Ehukai Beach Park top the lists of most surfers. The best way to Pipeline is to look for Sunset Elementary School, which is across the street from Ehukai Beach Park. Other popular North Shore surf spots, include: Laniakea, Backyards, Honolua Bay and Sunset. The top surf spot on South Shore is Canoes.

Mazatlan is considered a surfer’s paradise with waves that are great for beginners to experts. This surf town is famous for “sick, long left waves” where the barrels roll in from the left. The best waves can be found at Playa Norte, Playa Bruja and Playa Olas Altas. About 15 miles south of Mazatlan, you’ll find another good spot at Isla de las Piedras. The biggest swells runs from April through September. But many surfers feel the waves are also decent from November to March, but the water is colder.
