Area Attractions
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Vizcaya, the winter home of International Harvester vice president James Deering, offers a unique glimpse of a vanished lifestyle in America. Today one of South Florida's leading attractions, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens provides a window to both the history of Miami, graced by the villa since it completion in 1916; and to the Italian Renaissance, represented in the Museum's architecture. Its art and furnishings portray 400 years of European history.
Red Reef Park
There is a mile of beachfront in this 39-acre park, which includes the 15-acre Gumbo Limbo Nature Center on the Intracoastal side. One of the few beaches open after dark (until 10 p.m.), Red Reef offers swimming, sunbathing, surf casting and strolling over the dunes along a boardwalk. Designated surfing area on south end. The most notable feature is the man-made reef about 10 feet off shore, where even beginning snorkelers can catch sight of tropical fish, turtles, eels and stingrays.
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center
Come walk around! Learn something new! See how we're advancing coastal and marine learning! Find out how to make a difference! Stroll through the butterfly garden, climb the observation tower located on the winding boardwalk through coastal hammock, sit in a Chiki hut, visit the saltwater tanks brimming with marine life, including sea turtles, fish, sharks and rays and take pictures in our sea turtle garden with 7 giant turtles.
The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens
Since its opening in 1977, The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens has been a center for Japanese arts and culture in South Florida, with rotating exhibitions in its galleries, tea ceremonies performed monthly in its Seishin-an tea house, an educational outreach program with local schools and organizations, and Japanese traditional festivals celebrated for the public several times a year. The original building, named the Yamato-kan, is modeled to suggest a Japanese villa.
South Florida Science Museum
Let the Aldrin Planetarium transport you above and beyond our planet with our daily shows and special programs. The Spitz star projector turns the planetarium theater's dome into the night skies--during the day! Sit back in our inclined chairs, look up at the dome and discover quazars, nebulas, eclipses, constellations, galaxies and more. The Aldrin Planetarium presents pre-recorded astronomy shows and live, narrated star shows daily.
