Tonto Natural Bridge State Park
This little park is a must see if you are in the area. The park is located just north of Payson, Arizona, and is about a two hour drive from Pine Top. They believe this is the world's largest natural travestine (type of rock) bridge in the world. The whole park can be seen in probably two to three hours, but you may want to stay for the entire day. There were no crowds the day we visited (late afternoon on a Wednesday in April). In fact, during our time there we saw only five other people.
Apache Painted Desert
Apache County was carved from Yavapai County one Arizona's original four counties on February 24, 1879, by the 10th Territorial Legislative Assembly. Leaders of St. Johns and Globe had petitioned for their towns to be the county seat, but the honor went temporarily to Snowflake, with the provision that an election would determine the permanent county seat. In November 1879, on the strength of votes from the mining town of Clifton (now in Greenlee County), St. Johns was designated the county seat.
Pinetop Country Club
Pinetop Country Club is situated on property which was once part of Sitgreaves National Forest before being acquired by Southwest Forest Industries around 1960. After Southwest Forest held the property for a few years, they abandoned their plans to move the McNary lumber operation to these 1,196 acres. The entire acreage was then made available for purchase. In 1964 the partnership of Bob Fernandez, Glen L. Jones and Frank Crosby obtained an option to purchase this acreage.
Petrified Forest National Park
With one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, multi-hued badlands of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of over 200-million-year-old fossils, this is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science.
Meteor Crater
The Meteor Crater in the state of Arizona was the first crater to be identified as an impact crater. Between 20,000 to 50,000 years ago, a small asteroid about 80 feet in diameter impacted the Earth and formed the crater. The crater is the best preserved crater on Earth and measures 1.2 km in diameter. For many years, scientists had denied that there were any impact craters on Earth. The origin of this crater has been a source of controversy for many years. The discovery of fragments of the Canyon Diablo meteorite help prove that the feature was in fact an impact crater.
