Calaveras County Fair

What to expect at the Calaveras County Fair:

Calaveras County has a large agricultural community so keep an eye out for livestock viewing and competitions, and like other county fairs you’ll experience a myriad of food booths, games and carnival rides that the whole family will enjoy. The fair also hosts entertainment acts. In 2017 enjoy country music singer, Ned LeDoux, the CCPRA Rodeo, and crowd favorite, the Destruction Derby.  Don’t forget to check out all the other competitions at the fair from the Miss Calaveras Pageant, to wine and baked goods. There’s tons of fun to be had at this year’s Calaveras County Fair. Visit their website for more information.

What is the Jumping Frog Jubilee?

The Jumping Frog Jubilee is (you guessed it) a jumping frog contest. Contestants locally and nationally attend the jubilee. The top 50 frogs that jump the farthest distance qualify for the international Frog Jump Grand Finals. There’s a cash prize of $5,000 for breaking the world record which was set in 1986 but Rosie the Ribeter. Stop by the Jumping Frog Jubilee for lots of laughs and to cheer on your favorite bull frog.

How did the Jumping Frog Jubilee start?

The Calaveras County Fair is one of the longest running events in the State of California dating back to 1893, but the Jumping Frog Jubilee has literary origin dating back to Mark Twain’s first novel. A well-known resident of Calaveras County, Mark Twain began his career in a cabin just south of Angels Camp where the county fair is held. It’s rumored that Twain overheard a story in a local tavern that inspired his first published work, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”.  In turn, Calaveras County started their jumping frog contest in 1928 that became part of the annual fair in the 1930’s.
